Orphans Project

Over 3000 War/AIDS Orphans
Live Alone in Child-Headed Households

As of January 2005, there are over 3,000 orphans. These are war and AIDS orphans between the ages of 2 and 18 years. They live alone in child-headed households, in which the elder child assumes the parental responsibilities and so education is not possible for that elder child. The project supports orphans in different ways to enable them to live and to prepare them for a better future. The support is in the form of:

Education We encourage them to go to school. We give them exercise books, pens, school uniforms and school fees. Since they live at the school during the school term, they are provided with blankets, mattresses and other living material.
Basic Health Care We bring them to the hospitals or to clinics when they are sick.
Nutritional Care / Agriculture To sustain their nutrition requirements we provide them with chickens, rabbits, pigs, sheep and goats. This livestock program helps them to get eggs and meat, and manure to fertilize their agriculture fields to grow food. They sell their surplus to generate income to meet other domestic needs.
Shelter We renovate their houses to enable them to live well in their homes.
Leisure & Culture We promote music, dance and drama, sports and film shows. These leisure activities help to provide recreation as well as pleasant social experiences that help them to deal with and recover from the trauma of their past, and to enrich their cultural values.
