Clean Water & Environment Efforts to Improve Water Quality, Reduce Soil Erosion and Combat Deforestation |
Water and environment are important to sustainable development, but water quality and quantity are still a major problem in the village. Nevertheless, with the help of Engineers Without Borders-USA, efforts have been made to improve the water quality and quantity in the schools, the local clinic and in the homes of surrounding families.
Rwanda being a hilly country, there are often landslides and soil erosion problems during the rainy season. The water comes from the springs and from roof catchments. Educational campaigns are going on to encourage people to plant more trees near their homes. A nursery bed has been established by the Muramba Kolping family to produce more seedlings to give to the community. Trees planted are meant to provide timber, firewood, fruits for food security, and to improve soil conservation.
To combat existing deforestation, especially in search for firewood, renewable energy projects are being developed, like briquettes and solar cooking.
